To mark the 20th anniversary of Lyon’s photography centre, Le Bleu du Ciel, Gilles Verneret, its director, is revisiting the photographers who have exhibited there over the years and who have defined a certain line of documentary photography. This book highlights the creativity and plurality of documentary photography through the works of nearly 100 photographers, many of them French, but also from all over the world.
From 1990-2000, the human and social sciences became a strong new reference point for photographers. Defying or sometimes openly criticising the institution of photojournalism, photographers are asserting the values of investigation, fieldwork, economic and social analysis, and political deciphering. Our contemporaries are inventing a poetics of responsibility, making documentary a genre open to the imagination of a world to come.
In addition to historical texts by Gilles Verneret and Michel Poivert presenting different aspects of this new documentary photography, this book also includes texts written by the photographers featured.
